Stale doughnut tax imposed on New Yorkers
Here’s something interesting, in New York (state) it’s cheaper to buy a bagel, take it outside and then slice it as opposed to letting your local delicatessen or bakery do it for you. This is becuase of a law that imposes a strange tax depending on if the bagel is “prepared” and if it’s eaten on the premises. Oddly enough it was never enforced by anyone.
Until now. With the whole “impending economic doom” thing floating around, the taxman (or taxwoman, I’m not sexist) has decided to come collecting. Bakers and purveyors of the delicious stale doughnut are being hit with the tax and fees for being out of compliance.
Note, according to this law, if you’re a street vendor selling bagels, your clients are allowed to eat on the premises, but your slicing and buttering of the bagel is subject to the tax.
